Try using Dry shampoo for your dog if you don't have time to bath it or it is unwell or old.
Like us, your dog will at times have minor health issues such as dirt in his eyes, waxy ears, minor rashes and bites, constipation. These can be simply treated at home - provide your dog is not in distress and does not also appear to be very unwell.
Extra's for simple first aid and general health care of your dog.
Home treatment for minor issues, not for serious or obviously painful ones, can be very useful but if even a minor problem persists, or a simple treatment doesn't clear it in a few hours, then your dog should be seen by a qualified vet.
Tears eye drops - a drop or two is great for cleaning eyes, for dry eyes, and helping to clear gunk out of dog's eyes. Old dogs may get "dry eye" now and then and a couple of drops of the artificial tears will lubricate the eye and clean it. These tears are available at supermarkets and chemists and are quite cheap. It's a tiny bottle but you only use a drop or two in an eye at a time.
Ear Cleaner - brands include Epi-Otic, Leo Ear Drops and various others - available from your Vet surgery, or pet shop. Use as directed.
Laxative - a mild one such as a lactic acid based one, Actilac or something similar, useful if your dog tends to be constipated after eating too many bones. Some small dogs will get constipated from eating a couple of chicken wings or necks so if they are accidentally fed them a mild laxative given in the proper dose for the dog can be useful. Ask your vet or vet nurse what amount would be suitable for a dog of your dog's weight.
Glucose - useful to have on hand if you have small puppies or old or sick dogs. If a dog won't, or can't, eat because of health problems or old age a solution of a teaspoon of glucose mixed with a cup of warm water can be made up and the dog given a small amount, 5 to 10 mls, with a syringe or eye dropper several times a day to keep their energy up. Baby puppies that are not feeding well may also benefit at times from being given a few mls/ccs of this solution. Do not give to diabetic dogs.
Animal re-hydration salts - useful to have on hand if you have old or sick dogs.
Like old people, and young children, old dogs and small puppies can become dehydrated from diarrhea or the heat in hot weather, and these dogs will actually drink the solution sometimes by choice if they have a bowl of this and a bowl of fresh water available to them. Always have plenty of fresh pure water available also. If they don't drink the re-hydration salt mixture themselves they probably don't need it.
For some serious medical conditions your vet may prescribe re-hydration fluids and in that case they must be given by syringe into the mouth if the dog won't drink the solution. But as a home remedy always let the dog choose whether to drink them or not, do not force them.
Syringes - small and medium, .for giving measured amounts of laxative or other medications to your dog by squirting it into its mouth.
Eyedropper - for giving measured amounts of laxative or other medications, by squirting it into the dog's mouth.
These items are all relatively cheap and if you never need to use them, terrific! But they can be very useful, particularly if you are nursing a sick dog for a few days.
Always seek a vets advice as to the amounts of any non-prescription medication that would be suitable for your dog. All these medications may be harmful if used inappropriately.
