YOUR
DOG’S COAT
Two
Chinese Crested Powderpuffs in full coat, with clipped faces.
THE
FIRST QUESTION A
dog with a well groomed long coat is a pleasure to see. But if you want to keep
your dog’s coat long, then the first thing you need to know is whether your
dog has a good easy-care coat, or one that knots up and matts easily. Once you
have established that, you will have some idea what length it is going to
realistically be possible to keep their coat. Difficult
coats Some
dogs, both crossbreeds and purebreds, have coats that will be unmanageable once
they reach a certain length. This is a sad fact, and very disappointing if you
have acquired a long coated dog with visions of it always being in beautiful,
full-length coat. With
some dogs even brushing and combing them twice daily won’t be enough to keep
their hair untangled—they will still manage to get matts. The
reality is that some dogs’ coats are just like that. If you wanted a long coat
and are unlucky enough to have a dog whose coat turns out to be like this, then
you must accept that you will have to keep your dog clipped. Such
coats will often be quite all right until they grow to between 2 cm (1 inch) and
4 cm (2 inches) in length. Once they reach this length they suddenly become
unmanageable, and it can literally seem to happen overnight. If
this is going to be the case with your dog, you will find out fairly quickly
after it loses its puppy coat. A dog generally loses its lovely, easy-care puppy
coat between the ages of 4 and 10 months.
Our
cover dog is an adult American Cocker Spaniel in stunning show coat. The
shorter hair on his face and upper ear are enhanced natural features. But the
lovely straight line around the bottom of the legs is obviously man, or woman,
made!
